La loire Valley region includes 87 appellations under the Appellation d'Origine Controlee (AOC),Vin Delimite de Qualite Superieure (VDQS) and Vin de pays systems. The region stretches almost the full length of this river - the longest in France. Starting by the Atlantic coast at Nantes with its nearby Muscadet it travels through the great Savennieres & Vouvray appelations. These produce delicious, often off dry, wine from the Chenin Blanc grape. Then there are the great central vineyards of Sancerre & Pouilly Fume where the Sauvignon Blanc grape reigns supreme, producing wines of wonderful vitality & freshness.
