Chateau Puy Ducasse is located in Pauillac wine area in the Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux. The estate comprises 59 hectares of which 40ha are planted to vine. The vineyards are around 62 percent Cabernet Sauvignon on silica and gravel soils, and 38 percent Merlot on sandy gravel soils.Divided into three distinct plots back dated to the 18th Century when Pierre Ducasse unified his vineyard holdings under a single name. These parcels border the famous Mouton, Lafite and Pontet Canet to the north, and cover part of the shallow hill called Grand Puy.
In the middle of the 17 th century, Arnaud Ducasse bought a small house, on the banks of the Gironde estuary. His successor Pierre Ducasse, a lawyer passionate about vine-growing, is the real founder of the estate. His son inherited the 60-hectare estate (148 acres), then called “Ducasse-Grand-Puy-Artigues-Arnaud”, of which two-thirds were planted with vine. Around 1820, he had the existing château built, on the site of his ancestors' house, facing the Gironde estuary. The estate stay in the family until 2004, CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Groupe Crédit Agricole, acquired Château Grand Puy Ducasse. An improvement plan was put together for the entire estate. It is supervised today by Anne Le Naour, the Technical Director, and the consultant oenologist, Hubert de Bouärd.
The grapes are hand-harvested and selections take place both in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery. The fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine is aged a for 18-24 months in French oak barrels, with 30 to 40 percent new wood.
