CALIFORNIA EYES'.EUROPE EXPECTS SMALLER HARVEST DUE TO PRICE RISE
Across the northern hemisphere, wine producers expect a smaller crop from their grape harvest, but are still optimistic for some quality results.
In California,grape supplies are scarce,effecting consumer wine bargains,despite California's 2012 wine grape crop being around 3.7 tonnes,up 9% on 2011.
Rabobank analysist Stephen Rannekliev said,'consumers had been finding good value at lower prices, but it may soon become harder to find'.'Good summer weather however means there are promising signs for California's ares of growth.'
Elsewhere in Europe is a more varied picture.France had its lowest harvest last year since 1991.The mood was down in Burgundy, but up in Bordeaux,'There is still some superior quality, thankfully following the yields of 2011.' said Martin Krajenski of Chateau De Sours in Entre-Deux-Mers.
Italy meanwhile, had its second lowest harvest in 2012 since 1950,down 35% on 2011.Drought like conditions were to blame. For the harvests of Barolo and Barbaresco,it was, according to David Berry Green of Berry Bros and Rudd 'still all to play for',for a positive Italian harvest.Due to the three dry summer months and lack of water to the Sangiovese grape.
Of Portugal's three top regions, only the Douro grape is tipped to exceed 2011,with expected falls for Dao and Aletejo.
In Germany, the winemakers reckon to a consistent good grape harvest on a par with 2011,due to moderate temperatures, for a constant ripening of grapes.
