The Saumur is a wine appellation in the Loire Valley region in Ffrance located south of the city of Saumur . The appellation including 39 communes (towns) within 3 departements (county). The area covers a numbers of sub- appellations such as Saumur-Champigny, Coteaux de Saumur and Saumur Mousseux. Cremant de la Loire is also produced in this region.Reds are primarily made from Cabernet Franc and whites from Chenin Blanc. For the whites, Chenin Blanc must comprise at least 80% of the blend with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc being permitted for the remainder. For the reds the permitted grapes are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis with locals over whelmingly favouring Cabernet Franc as their grape of choicrate départements

While the broader Saumur appellation covers some 39 communes, the Saumur-Champigny appellations is restricted to the communes of Chacé, Montsoreau, Parnay, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, Saumur, Souzay-Champigny, Turquant and Varrains.
