The grand cru ,1er cru appellation
The champane Grand cru appellation did extented to 17 communes (villages) in 1985 .Although the appellation was first introduced in the 19 century and was finalised in the biginning of the 20 th to end the 1910 champagne riots disorder . All Grand cru or 1er cru are located in the Marne area (departement) Meaning only 9% of champagne vignard have receive 100% grand cru rating. The echelle des crus was first established to creat a pricing structure. The prices grapes was priced per kilogram and vineyards received a fraction of the price depenting of the rating they were located. Grand crus rating received 100% of the price , the 1er crus received 95% of the price and so forth down the line. Today the pricing system did change however the classification Grand cru and 1er cru still receive a beter price for their grapes than other communes
