Burgundy is a place, a sprit, a wine- in brief- a world; and so it has been for centuries . Although the The history of Burgundy began in the 5th century with the invasion of the Burgundii, a fairly peaceful barbarian people who originated in Scandinavia. The wine has been produced in Burgundy (Gaule at the time) longtime before the Roman empire fall. Since then The French through the years did exepnaded the wine industry and developed a complexe setting of rules, regulations and boundaries in the wine industry.In France the wine area are divided by regions (county- region) , and each regions is subivided (departement) and each departements is divided by appellation (AOC) which is named after the wine area or commune, (village) and/or after the producer name (domaine .., chateaux .. , clos.. or producer name). Also Burgundy region following a strict wines making criteria limited to specific vines and wine area call classification (grand cu, premier cru,) .Those regulated classification have been developed by Jules Lavalle in his book wrote in 1861. Lavalle's classification was formalized by the Beaune Committee of Agriculture.However the designations of grand cru and premier cru were later developed and expanded on in the 1930s with the creation of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (or AOC) system.
For Burgundy wine, the term is applied to classified vineyards, with Premier cru being the second-highest classification level, below that of Grand cruand above the basic village AOCs. For Burgundy wines, the terms Premier Cru or 1er Cru are usually kept rather than being translated into English
